Behind the Scenes!
Costumes and props are crucial to the success of any stage production. Stage Right owns a large collection of costumes and accessories, but the theme of each show may mean that parents provide certain items. In fact, it is a common occurrence to see two or three sewing machines running and moms armed with glue guns in the basement as the children rehearse upstairs! Parents love to provide these small helps in order to facilitate a successful show!
Many moms work in the costuming department finding and sizing costumes for every home school show. Many other family members also assist in bringing together the final production. In the spring, more volunteers are needed because the teen and pre-teen groups each perform their own show. While students are occasionally asked to supplement a costume with something they may already have at home, every effort is made to provide the necessary costumes. Monies from the concessions and Night of the Stars are often used to purchase materials to make new pieces.
All students usually need to have dark colored shoes and a unitard or tank top and shorts to wear underneath all costumes to provide modesty in costume changes during performances. Dressing areas are not private and students must change backstage. The use of deodorant is essential throughout the performances in order to protect the costumes from stains and odors. Near the start of each semester, students will receive a Costume Sizing Sheet that must be completed and returned as soon as possible so the costuming process may begin.
After the show costumes should be laundered and returned to Stage Right for use in other productions.
